Thripti Mountains, Azorias & the Ancient Olive Tree: Crete’s Hidden History and Nature
Journey through the Thripti Mountains, visit the ancient city of Azorias, marvel at a 3,000-year-old olive tree, and end your day by the sea in the charming village of Mochlos.
Step off the beaten path and uncover the raw beauty and ancient history of Crete on this full-day Thripti – Azorias – Ancient Olive Tree adventure.
Your journey begins on a rural road heading southeast, toward the dramatic entrance of Ha Gorge, one of Crete’s narrowest and most striking canyons. Framed by towering limestone walls and a wild, untouched setting, this spot is perfect for a photo stop or a short walk to admire its rugged charm.
From here, the road climbs into the Thripti Mountains, a serene landscape of pine forests, terraced fields, and old shepherd huts. As you ascend, the views open up to reveal sweeping panoramas over Mirabello Bay. In a peaceful mountain village, you’ll pause for a traditional coffee in a local kafeneio — a true taste of rural Crete.
Descending from the plateau, your next stop is the Azorias archaeological site, an Early Iron Age settlement with well-preserved stone structures. From here, you’ll gaze out over the countryside while learning about the early urban life of ancient Crete.
Continuing toward Kavousi, you’ll visit the Monumental Olive Tree — estimated to be over 3,000 years old and still bearing fruit. With its massive, gnarled trunk and historical plaques, it’s a living testament to Crete’s deep-rooted agricultural traditions and its enduring connection to the past.
The day concludes with a visit to the coastal village of Mochlos, a peaceful fishing haven with crystal-clear waters. Enjoy a relaxing swim or simply soak in the laid-back atmosphere as you reflect on your journey through Crete’s mountains, history, and coastline.
