Trekking Mount Karfi: Myth, History & Panoramic Views
Climb Mount Karfi from Tzermiado village, exploring ancient Minoan ruins, the legendary birthplace of Zeus, and panoramic views over Lassithi Plateau, Selena & Dikti mountains, and the Aposelemi dam
Embark on an unforgettable hike to Mount Karfi, a summit steeped in history and mythology, rising above Crete’s iconic Lassithi Plateau. This fertile land, once dotted with thousands of white-sailed windmills, is not only a marvel of rural ingenuity but also, according to Greek mythology, the birthplace of Zeus, King of the Gods.
Our journey begins in the charming village of Tzermiado. We ascend via a gentle uphill road to the serene Nissimos Plateau, where the trail to Karfi’s summit awaits. As we climb, the rugged beauty of the Cretan mountains unfolds before us, leading to the mountaintop where the ruins of an ancient Minoan settlement stand—silent witnesses to a civilization thousands of years old.
From the summit, the rewards are unmatched: sweeping views of the north coast, the majestic peaks of Selena and Dikti, and the shimmering Aposelemi dam. The descent takes us along a different route, following a centuries-old rocky mule path back to Tzermiado, adding a rustic charm to the return.
This trek is more than just a hike—it’s a journey through Crete’s myths, history, and landscapes, offering a deeper connection to the island’s soul.
