Best Beaches in Chania
Chania has more world-class beaches than any other Cretan region
Balos and Elafonisi alone draw thousands of visitors a day in summer. The reward for the effort to reach the famous ones (a gravel road, a 30-min hike, a 1-hour ferry) is dramatic, often empty turquoise water unlike anywhere else in Greece. This guide covers the seven best Chania beaches honestly — when to go, how to get there, what to expect.
1Balos Lagoon
Kissamos (17 km) · Scenery · Couples
The most photographed lagoon in Crete. Vast shallow turquoise water, dramatic cape, fine white-pink sand. Reach by boat from Kissamos or hike 30 min from the rough top road.
Local tip: Hike up Cape Tigani for the panoramic shot — and to escape the lagoon crowds.

2Elafonisi
Gialos (5 km) · Families · Pink Sand
World-famous pink-tinged sand and a shallow turquoise lagoon you can wade across to the 'island'. Protected nature reserve. Crowded midday in peak summer — go early or late.
Local tip: Walk past the lagoon for cedar forest and quieter coves.

3Agioi Apostoli Beach
Chania (5 km) · Families
A cluster of four small protected coves with sandy bottoms and shallow water — the easiest beach for families staying near Chania town. Walking distance from Nea Chora.
Local tip: Cove 4 (the furthest) is usually quietest.

4Agia Marina Beach
Chania (10 km) · Families · Watersports
Long sandy Blue Flag beach in a busy resort village. Plenty of sunbeds, beach bars and watersports. Great for families wanting an organised holiday strip atmosphere.
Local tip: Consider Stalos (just before Agia Marina) for fewer crowds and wider sand.

5Preveli Beach
Plakias (45 km drive) · Scenery · Adventure
Iconic palm-fringed beach where a freshwater river meets the Libyan Sea. Steep 15-min descent or boat from Plakias / Agia Galini. Coarse sand and pebbles.
Local tip: Rent a paddleboat to explore the river through the palm forest.

6Falasarna Beach
Kissamos (17 km) · Sunsets · Windsurfing
Vast Blue Flag beach famous for spectacular sunsets. Open and exposed — often wavy, perfect for windsurfing, calm enough for swimming on still days.
Local tip: Visit the ancient Hellenistic port ruins at the northern end.

7Seitan Limania
Chania (22 km) · Adventure · Scenery
Lightning-bolt-shaped cove between towering cliffs on the Akrotiri Peninsula. Steep 10-15 min hike down, no facilities, often visited by friendly wild goats.
Local tip: Bring water shoes — the bottom is pebbly and gets warm in afternoon sun.
