Best Beaches in Rethymno
Rethymno's beaches divide neatly
The long sandy north coast (city beach, Adelianos, Bali, Episkopi) and the wild, dramatic south (Preveli, Triopetra, Plakias, Damnoni). This guide compares them honestly — facilities, water conditions, when to go, and how the south-coast drive splits a one-day visit.
1Preveli Beach
Plakias (10 km) · Scenery · Adventure
Iconic palm-fringed beach where the Megalopotamos River flows into the Libyan Sea. A 15-minute steep descent or boat from Plakias / Agia Galini. Coarse sand, dramatic gorge backdrop.
Local tip: Rent a paddleboat to explore the river through the palm forest.

2Plakias Beach
Plakias village · Families · Watersports
Long sweeping bay on the south coast — organised in front of the village, wilder at the eastern end. A relaxed resort town with strong Cretan character.
Local tip: Walk past the main organised section to the eastern end for quieter spots and interesting rock formations.

3Triopetra Beach
Akoumia (40 km south) · Wild south coast · Sunsets
Three iconic rocks rising from the sea give Triopetra its name. A long, often windy beach with a wild atmosphere, popular with yoga retreats and naturists.
Local tip: Sunset here is one of the best in Crete — check the wind forecast and pick a calm day.

4Damnoni Beach
Damnoni village · Families · Sheltered swimming
A series of three small linked coves with shallow turquoise water, much more sheltered than the wild south-coast beaches. Great for families.
Local tip: The smallest cove (the most eastern) is clothing-optional and far less crowded.

5Ligres Beach
Akoumia area · Seclusion · Wild beauty
A long, undeveloped pebble-and-sand beach on the south coast — one of the wildest stretches on Crete. Almost no facilities, dramatic scenery.
Local tip: Bring everything — water, food, umbrella. This is a true escape from the world.

6Bali Beach
Mylopotamos (north coast) · Coves · Family resort
Series of small sheltered coves carved into the mountainside on the north coast. Protected from the Meltemi wind, very safe for kids, but the village is built on steep slopes.
Local tip: Karavostasi is the prettiest of the four coves; stay there if you want a beachfront base.

7Agia Galini Beach
Agia Galini village · Atmosphere · South coast base
Charming whitewashed fishing village with a long sandy beach right at its doorstep. The most atmospheric south-coast base after Plakias.
Local tip: Boats run from here to Preveli, Triopetra and Matala — easier than driving in summer.

8Rethymno Town Beach
Rethymno old town · Convenience · Walkable from town
Long sandy beach right at the doorstep of the old town — uniquely accessible for a Cretan city. Organised, family-friendly, surprisingly clean.
Local tip: Best for a quick swim before dinner without leaving the city.
