Morosini Fountain: The Heart of Heraklion's Old Town
In the bustling heart of Heraklion's old town stands the Morosini Fountain, a masterpiece of Venetian sculpture that has served as the city's social hub for over 400 years. Also known as the Lions Fountain for its four carved lions supporting the basin, this elegant monument anchors Lions Square (Plateia Liontarion).
History of the Fountain
Commissioned by Francesco Morosini, the Venetian governor of Crete, the fountain was completed in 1628. It marked the end point of an aqueduct bringing water from Mount Juktas, 15 kilometers away – a remarkable engineering feat that supplied fresh water to the city for the first time.
The Lions
The four lions supporting the main basin are actually much older than the fountain itself, believed to date from a 14th-century structure. Their weathered faces have witnessed centuries of Heraklion's history.
The Decorations
Eight lobed basins feature reliefs depicting sea nymphs, dolphins, bulls, and scenes from Greek mythology. The central column once supported a statue of Poseidon, lost during the Ottoman period.
The Square Today
Lions Square remains Heraklion's primary gathering place. Cafes ring the plaza, filled from morning coffee through late-night drinks. The square connects to the main shopping street, 25th August Street, and the covered market on 1866 Street.
Visiting Tips
- Best time: Evening, when locals gather for their volta (evening stroll)
- Combine with: The nearby Loggia and St. Titus Church
- Photography: Beautiful at blue hour when cafe lights illuminate the square
- Coffee break: Pull up a chair at a surrounding cafe and people-watch
The fountain may no longer provide the city's water, but it continues to serve as its social wellspring – a place where Heraklion's past and present flow together beneath the watchful eyes of four ancient lions.
