Rethymno's old town is often called the most romantic in Crete, and for good reason. Narrow streets wind through perfectly preserved Venetian architecture, past Ottoman minarets and Byzantine churches. The lack of large-scale development makes walking here feel like stepping back through centuries.

Venetian Heritage

The Venetians ruled Rethymno from 1210 to 1646, leaving an architectural legacy that survives remarkably intact:

  • Rimondi Fountain: Three lion heads spouting water since 1626
  • The Loggia: Venetian meeting hall, now a museum shop
  • Venetian Harbor: Smaller but equally charming as Chania's
  • Noble houses: Look for carved doorways and coats of arms

Ottoman Legacy

Ottoman rule (1646-1897) added another layer to the architectural mix:

  • Neratzes Mosque: Former church with a climbable minaret
  • Kara Musa Pasha Mosque: Near the Porta Guora
  • Turkish bathhouses: Several survive in various states

Key Streets

  • Arkadiou Street: Main pedestrian thoroughfare with shops
  • Ethnikis Antistaseos: Quieter, more local atmosphere
  • Souliou Street: Antiques, crafts, and traditional products

Hidden Gems

  • Historical Museum: Excellent collection of local artifacts
  • Centre of Byzantine Art: Icons and religious art
  • Public Garden: Peaceful escape from summer heat

Tips for Visiting

  • Best time: Early morning or evening for photographs
  • Getting lost: The old town is small; embrace aimless wandering
  • Siesta: Many shops close 2-5pm; use this for the beach

Rethymno's old town isn't just a museum – people live and work here, creating an authenticity that larger tourist centers often lack. Take your time, get lost, and discover your own favorite corner.
