Tucked into a sheltered bay on the northern coast of Crete, Agia Pelagia Beach is one of the most accessible seaside escapes from Heraklion. The protected cove creates calm, warm waters perfect for swimming, while the surrounding hills frame spectacular sunset views.

The Beach

Agia Pelagia's main beach is a crescent of fine sand and pebble mix lapped by turquoise waters. The bay faces north-northwest, shielded from the prevailing summer winds by the Souda peninsula. The result is remarkably calm water — even on days when northern beaches are choppy.

Facilities

  • Sunbeds and umbrellas: Well-organized rows along the shore
  • Tavernas: Seafood restaurants line the waterfront
  • Water sports: Snorkeling, paddleboarding, and sea kayaking
  • Parking: Available in the village, short walk to the beach

Beyond the Main Beach

The area around Agia Pelagia hides several smaller coves worth exploring. Lygaria and Mononaftis are just a short drive away, each offering their own character — from pebbly snorkeling spots to sandy family-friendly shores.

Practical Information

  • Distance from Heraklion: 25 km west, about 25 minutes by car
  • Bus: Regular KTEL service from Heraklion bus station
  • Best time: Morning for calm water, evening for sunset
  • Tip: Book a waterfront taverna table for sunset — the views are exceptional

Agia Pelagia strikes the perfect balance between resort convenience and natural beauty, making it an ideal day trip or base for exploring Heraklion's coastline.
