When Heraklion locals want to cool off without traveling far, Ammoudara Beach is their first choice. This 5-kilometer stretch of golden sand lies just west of the city, offering easy access to beach pleasures without sacrificing a day of sightseeing.

The Beach

Ammoudara's long, wide beach provides plenty of space even in peak season. The sand is soft and golden, the water clean and generally calm. The beach slopes gently, making it suitable for families with children and less confident swimmers.

Facilities

  • Sunbeds and umbrellas: Available along most of the beach
  • Beach bars: Several offering food, drinks, and music
  • Water sports: Jet skis, paddleboards, and banana boats
  • Showers and changing: At various points along the beach

Water Sports Paradise

The consistent conditions make Ammoudara popular for water sports. Several operators offer equipment rental and lessons. Windsurfing and kitesurfing are particularly popular when afternoon winds pick up.

After the Beach

The Ammoudara strip has developed into a lively area with tavernas, cafes, and nightclubs. Sunset drinks at a beach bar, followed by dinner at a seafood taverna, makes for a perfect evening.

Practical Information

  • Distance from Heraklion: 5 km west, 10-15 minutes by car
  • Bus: Regular service from Heraklion center
  • Parking: Available but limited in peak season
  • Best time: Morning for calm water, afternoon for water sports

Ammoudara proves you don't need to travel far from Crete's capital to find excellent beach conditions. It's the perfect way to combine city exploration with lazy beach time.
