Rising on the slopes above Chania, the Botanical Park of Crete offers a different kind of Cretan experience. This 20-hectare garden showcases Mediterranean plants, endemic species, and subtropical fruits in a setting that feels worlds away from beach tourism.

The Gardens

Winding paths lead through themed sections featuring:

  • Endemic Cretan plants: Many found nowhere else on Earth
  • Medicinal herbs: Traditional remedies still used today
  • Fruit orchards: Citrus, avocado, banana, and tropical varieties
  • Olive groves: Ancient and modern varieties
  • Aromatic gardens: Lavender, sage, rosemary, and more

Born from Tragedy

The park rose from devastating wildfires in 2003 that destroyed the family's olive groves. Instead of abandoning the land, they created this botanical sanctuary. The story of regeneration adds meaning to every plant you see.

The Restaurant

The park's restaurant serves dishes made almost entirely from on-site produce. Fresh salads, homemade bread, and farm-raised meat create an authentic Cretan meal. Many visitors say it's among the best food they eat in Crete.

Animals and Birds

Peacocks wander freely, donkeys and goats graze in enclosures, and birds fill the gardens with song. The park rescues abandoned animals, adding to its sanctuary atmosphere.

Practical Information

  • Location: 18 km from Chania, near Fournes village
  • Duration: 2-3 hours for gardens, plus lunch
  • Best time: Spring for flowers, summer for fruits
  • Tip: Wear comfortable shoes; paths involve gentle slopes

The Botanical Park offers welcome respite from beach and archaeological tourism. It's a chance to experience Crete's natural heritage while supporting a family's remarkable recovery from disaster.
