Lake Voulismeni: The Bottomless Lake of Lasithi
In the heart of Lasithi lies one of Crete's most unusual natural features – a small, almost circular lake surrounded by sheer cliffs. Lake Voulismeni has captured imaginations for millennia, spawning legends of goddesses bathing and depths reaching to the underworld.
The Legend
Ancient Greeks believed Lake Voulismeni was bottomless, connected to the sea or even the underworld. The goddess Athena was said to bathe in its waters. While modern measurements show a depth of 64 meters – impressive for its size but hardly infinite – the mystical atmosphere persists.
The Lake Today
A narrow channel now connects the lake to the sea (dug in 1867), though the water remains remarkably still. The surrounding cliffs, topped with cafes and tavernas, create an amphitheater effect that's especially magical after dark when lights reflect off the surface.
What to Do
- Cliff-top cafes: Coffee or drinks with unbeatable views
- Lakeside promenade: A pleasant walk around the water
- Fishing boats: Traditional boats moor along the channel
- Photography: Particularly beautiful at sunset and after dark
The Harbor Connection
The channel connects Lake Voulismeni to the town harbor, creating a unique waterfront that defines Lasithi. Walking from the lake to the harbor takes you past shops, restaurants, and the ferry dock.
Practical Information
- Location: Town center, impossible to miss
- Access: Open 24 hours; free
- Best time: Evening for atmosphere; morning for photographs
- Nearby: Town beach, archaeological museum, harbor
Lake Voulismeni is more than a geographic curiosity – it's the soul of Lasithi. No visit to eastern Crete is complete without time spent gazing into its mysterious depths.
