Fortezza Castle: Rethymno's Venetian Crown
On this page
Crowning the hill above Rethymno's old town, Fortezza is one of the largest and best-preserved Venetian fortresses in Greece. Built in the 16th century to defend against Ottoman pirates, its massive walls and strategic position made it the Venetians' last stronghold in western Crete.
History
The Venetians built Fortezza between 1573 and 1580, designed to shelter the entire population of Rethymno during attack. Despite the imposing defenses, the fortress fell to the Ottomans in 1646 after a siege of only 23 days – many citizens having fled to avoid the conflict.
