Crowning the hill above Rethymno's old town, Fortezza is one of the largest and best-preserved Venetian fortresses in Greece. Built in the 16th century to defend against Ottoman pirates, its massive walls and strategic position made it the Venetians' last stronghold in western Crete.

History

The Venetians built Fortezza between 1573 and 1580, designed to shelter the entire population of Rethymno during attack. Despite the imposing defenses, the fortress fell to the Ottomans in 1646 after a siege of only 23 days – many citizens having fled to avoid the conflict.

What to See

The Mosque of Sultan Ibrahim Han

The dominant structure inside the fortress was converted from a Venetian cathedral. Its massive dome and restored interior now host cultural events and exhibitions.

The Ramparts

Walk the complete circuit of walls for 360-degree views. Look north over the Cretan Sea, south to the White Mountains, and down into the maze of Rethymno's old town.

Archaeological Remains

  • Venetian governor's residence
  • Bishop's palace and church ruins
  • Military barracks and powder magazines
  • Cisterns and storage facilities

Events

Summer brings the Renaissance Festival with concerts, theater, and dance performances inside the fortress walls. The atmospheric setting makes even simple events memorable.

Practical Information

  • Hours: 8am-8pm (summer), reduced in winter
  • Duration: 1-2 hours for a thorough visit
  • Best time: Late afternoon for photos and sunset
  • Access: Short walk from old town; some steps

Fortezza rewards exploration. Beyond the main structures, quiet corners and empty ramparts offer space for contemplation – and some of the finest views in Crete.
