Kritsa Village: Traditional Crafts in the Mountains
Perched on a hillside above Lasithi, Kritsa is one of Crete's most celebrated traditional villages. Known for its woven textiles, embroidery, and the extraordinary Byzantine Church of Panagia Kera, Kritsa offers an authentic glimpse into highland Cretan culture.
Church of Panagia Kera
Just outside the village stands one of the most important Byzantine churches in Crete. The 13th-14th century frescoes inside are remarkably preserved, depicting biblical scenes with vivid colors and expressive figures. This small church is a treasure of Byzantine art.
Traditional Crafts
Kritsa's main street is lined with shops selling traditional products:
- Woven textiles: Tablecloths, bags, and blankets on traditional looms
- Embroidery: Intricate handwork passed down through generations
- Leather goods: Sandals and bags made locally
- Honey and olive oil: Local production from surrounding groves
The Village
Beyond the tourist shops, Kritsa remains a working village. Narrow streets wind between whitewashed houses, elderly women embroider on doorsteps, and kafeneia serve Greek coffee to local men. The views over the valley to the sea are spectacular.
Ancient Lato
A short drive above Kritsa leads to the ruins of Ancient Lato, a well-preserved Doric city with panoramic views. The site receives few visitors, offering peaceful exploration of temples, agoras, and cisterns.
Practical Information
- Location: 11 km from Lasithi
- Panagia Kera: Check opening hours; modest dress required
- Best time: Morning for Panagia Kera; any time for village
- Combine with: Ancient Lato, Lasithi
Kritsa bridges past and present. The Byzantine frescoes represent medieval devotion, the weavers continue centuries-old traditions, and the village atmosphere remains stubbornly authentic despite visitor numbers.
