Summary
Lasithi covers eastern Crete and offers Crete's most varied range of bases — Agios Nikolaos for a walkable lake-and-harbour town, Elounda for high-end resort holidays with island views, Sitia for the wild east coast and Vai, and the plateau villages for cool altitude in summer.
Why Lasithi works as a base
Lasithi is Crete's least-touristed region — palm beaches at Vai, the Minoan port of Gournia, the ex-leper colony of Spinalonga, the cool Lasithi plateau, the moonscape coves of Xerokampos. Most travellers base in Agios Nikolaos (best for first-timers), Elounda (high-end resorts) or Sitia (close to Vai and the eastern wilderness). The Lasithi plateau villages offer a unique high-altitude alternative.

Agios Nikolaos
Agios Nikolaos is built around a small inland lake (Voulismeni) joined to the harbour by a short channel — uniquely picturesque, walkable, with the best dining and nightlife in eastern Crete. Several small beaches are within walking distance of the centre. A great single base for exploring the whole region.
Look for hotels around Lake Voulismeni or above Kitroplateia beach for the best views.
Good for
- • First-time visitors to Lasithi
- • Walkable urban base
- • Easy access to Spinalonga, Elounda, plateau, Sitia day trips
Watch-outs
- • Beaches in town are small and pebbly
- • Some restaurants over-tourist-priced; ask locals
- • Few high-end accommodation options vs Elounda
Elounda
Elounda is the high-end resort capital of Crete — a sheltered bay facing Spinalonga island, with several of Greece's best luxury resorts (Blue Palace, Domes of Elounda, Elounda Mare, Elounda Beach). Excellent for high-end family holidays and honeymoons; village dining is good if you want a meal away from the resort.
Good for
- • Luxury resort holidays
- • Family resorts with island views
- • Honeymoons and milestone celebrations
Watch-outs
- • Resort prices climb sharply in July–August
- • Less authentic than Agios Nikolaos
- • Beach in the village is small — most of the swimming is at the resorts
Plaka
Plaka is the tiny fishing village immediately opposite Spinalonga island — only 15 minutes north of Elounda. Small guesthouses, a handful of fish tavernas, and the most direct boats (5 min) across to Spinalonga. Quietest of the central Lasithi bases.
Good for
- • Quiet stays with iconic views
- • Spinalonga repeat visitors
- • Travellers wanting a real fishing-village atmosphere
Watch-outs
- • Very small village — limited choice
- • Quiet evenings
- • No real beach in the village itself
Sitia
Sitia is the easternmost town of any size on Crete — a working harbour city with a long sandy beach, decent dining, the Sitia airport (small domestic flights), and direct access to Vai and the eastern wilderness (Xerokampos, Itanos, Toplou Monastery). Stay here for 2–3 nights if you're exploring the east end.
Good for
- • Far-east explorers
- • Vai + Xerokampos + Toplou base
- • Travellers escaping the busier western Crete
Watch-outs
- • 1.5 h drive from Agios Nikolaos and HER airport
- • Smaller selection of mid-range hotels
- • Quiet evenings in winter
Lasithi plateau villages
Tzermiado, Psychro and Agios Konstantinos sit at 850 m on the circular Lasithi plateau, ringed by mountains and dotted with traditional villages. Stay here for cool summer evenings, traditional tavernas, hiking on Mt Dikti, and the Diktean Cave (mythical birthplace of Zeus). The temperature drops 5–10°C below the coast.
Good for
- • Slow-travel couples wanting cool altitude
- • Hikers + nature lovers
- • Anyone escaping the August coastal heat
Watch-outs
- • Need a rental car
- • Limited high-end accommodation
- • Quiet at night — fewer late dining options
Ierapetra & south coast
Ierapetra is mainland Europe's southernmost city — the sunniest, warmest place in Greece. Beaches stretch east toward Makris Gialos and Ferma; the small town has a Venetian fort and a long seaside promenade. A great base for the south coast and the off-shore Chrissi island day trips.
Good for
- • Hot-weather lovers
- • Travellers wanting Libyan Sea beaches
- • Year-round mild winter base
Watch-outs
- • Less photogenic than Agios Nikolaos or Sitia
- • Real distance from the Vai/eastern attractions
- • Smaller resort selection
Transport & airports
Lasithi is served by Heraklion International Airport (HER, 1 h from Agios Nikolaos via E75 motorway) and the smaller Sitia Airport (JSH, domestic flights only). KTEL buses connect Heraklion to Agios Nikolaos hourly, and Agios Nikolaos to Elounda, Plaka, Sitia and Ierapetra. To reach Vai, the plateau, Xerokampos or the south-coast beaches, a rental car is strongly recommended.
