Your adventure awaits
Cross from the north coast of Crete to the south in a single day, by 4x4, on foot, and in the water. This jeep safari tour picks you up from the Agios Nikolaos area and takes you through traditional villages, pine forests, a gorge, and the south coast, all in one route. It's a full-day off-road tour that covers the kind of Crete most visitors never reach on their own.
The day begins in Kritsa, one of East Crete's best-known traditional villages. You walk through narrow streets lined with artisan textile shops and stop for coffee if the pace suits you. From there, the road climbs to a viewpoint above the Mirabello Gulf, where the coastline and the island of Spinalonga spread out below. Then the tarmac ends. Your driver takes the Defender or Mercedes Vito 4x4 off-road through the Kroustas pine forest, where the air cools, the landscape shifts, and you stop to collect wild herbs growing between the trees.
The central stop of the safari tour is Sarakina Gorge. You leave the vehicle and hike through the canyon on foot, between tall rock walls and thick vegetation. If the season and water levels allow, you can swim in the natural pools that form along the gorge floor. Your guide knows the route, the footing, and the best spots to stop. After the hike, lunch is waiting at a family run restaurant nearby: shared appetizers (Greek salad, tzatziki, local meze, bread), a choice of grilled pork, chicken, or a vegetarian option, wine, water, and a homemade dessert or seasonal fruit with raki. The food is local, the portions are generous, and the setting is about as far from a hotel buffet as you can get.
The last chapter of the day is Myrtos, a small village on Crete's south coast. You get free time to swim, sit by the sea, and notice how different this side of the island feels, quieter, wilder, and facing the Libyan Sea instead of the Aegean. Pickup from the Agios Nikolaos, Heraklion coast, and Elounda areas is around 08:30 to 09:30. You're back by late afternoon.
