Balos Beach: Where Turquoise Dreams Come True
On this page
Balos is the beach of a thousand photographs – and every one fails to capture its beauty. This shallow lagoon on Crete's northwestern tip displays water so impossibly blue that first-time visitors stop in disbelief. Reaching it requires effort, but the reward is one of the Mediterranean's most stunning seascapes.
The Lagoon
Balos is actually a lagoon formed between the Gramvousa Peninsula and a small island (also called Balos). The extremely shallow water – rarely above knee height for hundreds of meters – warms to bathtub temperatures and displays every shade from pale aquamarine to deep turquoise.
Getting There
By Boat (Recommended)
Ferries from Kissamos harbor take about 1 hour, usually stopping at Gramvousa Island and its Venetian fortress before continuing to Balos. The approach by sea is spectacular, with the lagoon gradually revealing itself.
By Car and Foot
A rough dirt road (4x4 recommended) leads to a parking area, then a steep path descends to the beach (20-30 minutes). The views from above are extraordinary, but the hike back up in midday heat is challenging.
What to Expect
- Water depth: Extremely shallow throughout the lagoon
- Sand: White, sometimes with pink tinges from crushed shells
- Facilities: Very limited; bring everything you need
- Shade: Almost none; umbrella essential
Tips for Your Visit
- Timing: Arrive early; boats dock 11am-3pm bringing crowds
- Essentials: Water, food, sunscreen, umbrella
- Photography: The viewing point from above is unmissable
- Footwear: Water shoes helpful for rocky areas
Gramvousa Island
Boat trips usually include a stop at Gramvousa Island with its dramatic Venetian fortress. The climb to the top is steep but offers 360-degree views. A shipwreck on the beach adds to the atmosphere.
Balos requires more effort than most beaches, but standing in that luminous water, surrounded by otherworldly colors, you'll understand why it's considered one of the world's most beautiful beaches.
