On the western tip of Crete, Falassarna Beach has earned its reputation as one of the finest beaches in Europe. With over a kilometer of wide, white sand, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and sunsets that paint the sky in every shade of gold and crimson, Falassarna is a destination that lives up to the hype.

The Beach

Falassarna is actually a series of five consecutive beaches stretching along the coast. The main beach — Pachia Ammos (Big Sand) — is the largest and most popular, with soft white sand and shallow, warm waters. The smaller coves to the north offer more seclusion and excellent snorkeling.

Facilities

  • Sunbeds and umbrellas: Available on the main beach
  • Beach bars: Refreshments and snacks throughout the day
  • Free areas: Plenty of unspoiled space beyond the organized sections
  • Parking: Large free parking area near the beach

The Legendary Sunsets

Facing directly west with an unobstructed ocean horizon, Falassarna offers what many consider the best sunset in all of Crete. Arrive an hour before sunset, claim your spot, and watch the sky transform. The ancient ruins of the Greco-Roman city at the northern end add a dramatic silhouette to the show.

Practical Information

  • Distance from Chania: 52 km west, about 1 hour drive
  • Road: Well-paved road all the way
  • Best time: Late afternoon for sunset, morning for calm waters
  • Don't miss: The ancient harbor ruins at the north end

Falassarna delivers the quintessential Cretan beach experience — wild natural beauty, warm hospitality, and a sunset you'll never forget.
