Just 12 kilometers from Lasithi, Istro Beach offers what many Cretan beaches promise but few deliver: genuinely calm water, soft sand, and a relaxed atmosphere without overwhelming crowds. It's become a favorite for families and those seeking a quieter alternative to more famous beaches.

The Beach

Istro (also called Kalo Chorio Beach) features a long stretch of golden sand meeting clear, shallow water. The gradual entry and protected bay create ideal conditions for children and less confident swimmers. The seabed is sandy with few rocks.

Facilities

  • Sunbeds/umbrellas: Available in the organized section
  • Free areas: Plenty of space for your own setup
  • Tavernas: Several options along the beach road
  • Parking: Available near the beach
  • Showers: At the organized beach areas

Nearby Attractions

  • Voulisma Beach: Another beautiful beach 2 km south
  • Lasithi: 12 km for shops, restaurants, and nightlife
  • Spinalonga: Day trips available from Lasithi

Practical Information

  • Location: 12 km south of Lasithi
  • Best for: Families, relaxation, swimming
  • Water sports: Limited – this is a beach for relaxing
  • Best time: June or September for perfect conditions

Tips

  • The northern end tends to be quieter
  • Afternoon shade arrives earlier due to surrounding hills
  • Local tavernas serve excellent fresh fish
  • The coastal road continues to other pretty coves

Istro won't make any "most spectacular" lists, but that's precisely its appeal. Sometimes you want a beautiful, comfortable beach without the crowds or the hype – and Istro delivers exactly that.
