On Crete's dramatic south coast, Plakias Beach stretches for over a kilometer beneath towering mountains. This Blue Flag beach combines excellent swimming conditions with a relaxed village atmosphere that keeps visitors coming back year after year.

The Beach

Plakias Beach is a long, wide crescent of sand and fine pebble that slopes gently into clear, warm water. The south-facing orientation means sunshine from dawn to dusk, while the surrounding mountains create a spectacular natural amphitheater. The water is remarkably clean — the Blue Flag award is well-deserved.

Facilities

  • Sunbeds and umbrellas: Organized sections with plenty of free beach too
  • Water sports: Diving lessons, paddleboarding, and snorkeling gear rental
  • Tavernas: Beachfront restaurants serving fresh catches
  • Showers: Available at multiple points along the beach

Nearby Coves

The coastline around Plakias hides several spectacular smaller beaches. Damnoni, Ammoudi, and Souda are all within a short drive, each offering their own character — from organized family beaches to secluded rocky coves.

Practical Information

  • Distance from Rethymno: 35 km south, about 40 minutes by car
  • Bus: Regular service from Rethymno bus station
  • Best time: Morning for calm waters, avoid strong afternoon winds
  • Accommodation: The village has excellent tavernas and small hotels

Plakias captures the essence of south Crete — dramatic landscapes, crystal waters, and a pace of life that invites you to slow down and stay awhile.
