Preveli Beach is unlike anywhere else in Crete. A river lined with palm trees flows through a gorge to meet the sea, creating a natural oasis of extraordinary beauty. The combination of freshwater pools, palm forest, and Mediterranean beach makes this one of the island's most magical destinations.

The Landscape

The Kourtaliotiko River emerges from a dramatic gorge, forming pools and cascades before meeting the sea. Native Theophrastus palms line the riverbanks – one of the Mediterranean's few natural palm forests. The beach itself is a crescent of golden sand and pebbles.

Getting There

From Above (Car Park)

Most visitors park at the upper lot and descend a path (20 minutes, moderate difficulty). The views during descent are spectacular, but remember you must climb back up.

By Boat

Small boats run from Plakias and Agia Galini, offering a scenic and easier approach. Check schedules locally.

Exploring the Area

  • The River: Wade upstream through knee-deep water to discover hidden pools
  • The Palm Forest: Explore the shaded groves along the riverbank
  • The Beach: Swimming in the sea offers the freshest water
  • The Gorge: Adventurous visitors can hike further into the canyon

Practical Information

  • Facilities: Very limited; small seasonal canteen
  • What to bring: Water, food, sun protection, water shoes
  • Best time: Morning for cooler hiking; afternoon for best light
  • Season: May-October for reliable facilities

Tips

  • The climb back is challenging in midday heat – consider morning or late afternoon
  • Water shoes are essential for riverbed exploration
  • The palm forest can shelter mosquitoes – bring repellent

Preveli Beach rewards the effort to reach it. This unique combination of river, palms, and sea creates an almost tropical atmosphere on Crete's wild south coast.
