Hidden in a sheltered bay near Istron, Voulisma Beach — also known as Golden Beach — is one of eastern Crete's best-kept secrets. The crystal-clear, shallow waters and fine golden sand make it a favorite for families, while the vibrant underwater life draws snorkelers from across the island.

The Beach

Voulisma occupies a perfect natural bay, protected from winds on three sides by gentle hills covered in olive trees. The sand is fine and golden, the water impossibly clear — you can see every pebble on the seabed from meters away. The beach slopes very gradually, creating a wide area of shallow, warm water ideal for children.

Facilities

  • Sunbeds and umbrellas: Well-organized along the beach
  • Snorkeling: Excellent around the rocky edges of the bay
  • Canteen: Beach bar serving drinks and light meals
  • Parking: Free parking area above the beach

Snorkeling Paradise

The rocky outcrops on either side of the bay create small reefs teeming with marine life. Bring a mask and fins — even from the shore you can spot colorful fish, sea urchins, and octopuses in the crystal-clear water.

Practical Information

  • Distance from Agios Nikolaos: 12 km south, about 15 minutes by car
  • Access: Well-signed road from the main highway
  • Best time: Early morning for the calmest water and fewer crowds
  • Combine with: Visit nearby Istro Beach and Karavostasi cove

Voulisma is proof that some of Crete's finest beaches don't need a long hike or boat ride to reach. Just 15 minutes from Agios Nikolaos, this golden bay delivers Caribbean-like conditions on the Cretan coast.
