Summary

Rethymno offers some of Crete's most distinctive accommodation choices — restored Venetian guesthouses inside the most intact old town in Greece, beach hotels along the long city beach, family resorts at Adelianos, and the wild Plakias on the south coast. This guide breaks down the trade-offs.

Why Rethymno works as a base

Rethymno sits halfway between Chania and Heraklion on the north coast, making it the easiest single base for travellers wanting to see both halves of Crete. The old town is the most intact Venetian quarter in Greece, the city beach is steps away, and the wild south coast (Preveli, Plakias) is a 45-minute drive over the central spine. Most visitors stay 3–4 nights here.

Venetian Old Town

Venetian Old Town

Rethymno's Old Town is the most intact Venetian quarter in Greece — narrow stone lanes, the Rimondi fountain, the Neratze mosque-turned-conservatory, and the Venetian harbour with its 13th-century lighthouse. Staying here means everything is on foot: the harbour, the Fortezza, the city beach a few minutes away. Most boutique hotels and stone-built guesthouses are concentrated here.

Look for restored Venetian houses around Salaminos, Vernardou or Arabatzoglou streets for the most atmospheric stays.

Good for

  • First-time visitors
  • Couples + photographers
  • Travellers without a car
  • Sunset photographers

Watch-outs

  • Limited car access — drop bags then park elsewhere
  • Some harbour-side rooms get bar noise in summer
  • Smaller selection of high-end hotels than Chania

City Beach Strip

City Beach Strip

The 12 km of sandy beach running east from the old town is lined with mid-range and family hotels. Stay here if you want beach in front of the hotel and the old town a 10–15 minute walk away — a hybrid that suits most family travellers.

Good for

  • Family beach holidays + city evenings
  • Travellers prioritising sand
  • Anyone wanting a pool

Watch-outs

  • The strip can feel dated in places
  • Beach gets busy in July–August
  • Some hotels are 20+ minutes' walk from the old town

Adelianos Kampos & Platanias

Adelianos Kampos & Platanias

East of the city, Adelianos and Platanias (Rethymno's, not Chania's) form the resort cluster — larger family hotels with pools, kids clubs and all-inclusive options. Excellent for families who want a one-stop resort with day trips to the old town and the south coast.

Good for

  • Family resort holidays
  • All-inclusive travellers
  • Larger hotels with pools and kids clubs

Watch-outs

  • Real distance from old town — count on a 15–20 min taxi for evenings
  • Less authentic than the historic centre
  • Can feel generic

Bali

Bali

A small resort village 32 km east of Rethymno on the road to Heraklion, Bali clusters around four sheltered coves of exceptionally clear water. Excellent base for snorkelling, mid-range family hotels, several good seafood tavernas — quieter than Adelianos.

Good for

  • Snorkelling and clear-water fans
  • Families wanting calm coves
  • Mid-range travellers

Watch-outs

  • Quieter at night — fewer late dining options
  • A real drive (35 min) into Rethymno old town
  • Coves can fill in midsummer

Plakias (south coast)

Plakias (south coast)

On the south coast, Plakias is a relaxed beach village with a long sandy beach, several family-run guesthouses, excellent fish tavernas and direct access to Preveli, Triopetra and Damnoni. A real change of pace from Rethymno city — slower, wilder, with the Libyan Sea instead of the Cretan.

Good for

  • South-coast escapes
  • Beach-focused travellers
  • Hikers (Imbros and Kourtaliotis gorges nearby)

Watch-outs

  • 1 h drive from Rethymno over the central spine
  • Limited high-end accommodation
  • Quieter in winter — many places shut

Amari valley villages

Amari valley villages

The Amari valley south of Rethymno is a string of stone villages (Thronos, Meronas, Vizari, Kardaki) surrounded by olive groves and Mt Ida. Stay here for cool altitude, traditional tavernas, slow village evenings — a real escape from coastal heat in midsummer.

Good for

  • Slow-travel couples
  • Nature lovers wanting cool altitude
  • Wine country travellers

Watch-outs

  • Need a rental car
  • Quieter evenings — fewer late dining options
  • Limited high-end accommodation

Transport & airport

Rethymno is roughly equidistant from Chania (CHQ, 1 h west) and Heraklion (HER, 1.25 h east) airports — both easily reached by motorway. KTEL buses connect Rethymno hourly to Chania and Heraklion. For the south coast, the Amari valley and the gorges, a rental car is strongly recommended. Old-town parking is restricted; use the public lots near the seafront.

Frequently Asked Questions

For most first-time visitors, yes — atmosphere, walkability and proximity to the city beach are unmatched. For longer stays or family resort holidays, the city beach strip or Adelianos work better.

Most of it is restricted-access. Drop bags at your accommodation if loading is permitted, then park at one of the seafront public lots.

Adelianos Kampos for full resort facilities. Bali for sheltered family-friendly coves. The city beach strip for a balance of beach + old town walks.

Yes if you want 2–3 nights of south-coast life — Preveli, Triopetra and Damnoni are right on your doorstep, the village has good tavernas, and the pace is much slower than the north coast.

Both work. Chania (CHQ) is slightly closer and the drive is more scenic. Heraklion (HER) often has more flight options. Choose by flight prices, not distance.
