Byzantine Iconography Workshop in Rethymno: Paint Your Own Icon

This hands-on cultural experience in Rethymno takes you into the world of Byzantine iconography, one of the oldest and most distinctive art traditions in the Mediterranean. Over three hours, you'll learn to work with the same raw materials and techniques that icon painters have used for centuries, and leave with a piece you made yourself. The session opens with a short introduction to the history and principles of Byzantine art, followed by a close look at the raw materials: mineral earth pigments ground into powder, egg yolk used as a binding medium, and the prepared canvas panel that will hold your work. You'll sketch the outline of your icon, then build up layers of natural color, adding definition and character stroke by stroke. The workshop runs to a background of traditional Byzantine music, which sets a calm, focused tone from the first minute. While your canvas dries between stages, you'll take a break with a traditional Cretan meze and a glass of local wine or raki. This is not a pause between activities. It is part of the rhythm of the experience, the same way a craftsman in Crete has always worked, with food and company woven into the day. Your host, an experienced iconographer, is with you throughout, adjusting the instruction to your level whether you have never held a brush or have years of practice.
