Tips for Families

  • Children eat and drink for free (soft drinks included), so this works well as a full family outing.
  • The hands-on format keeps kids engaged. They can shape bread, help with the cheese, or just watch the shepherd work.

Your adventure awaits

Step into a traditional Cretan village and spend a day doing what locals have done here for generations: baking bread, making cheese, cooking a full meal, and sitting together around the table to eat it. This cooking class takes place in Kato Karouzanos, a small village outside Heraklion that still runs on its own rhythm. You arrive and start with a walk through the village, learning how raki is distilled and how local honey is produced. Then you move into the kitchen, where the village cook shows you how to prepare traditional bread and bake it in a wood-fired oven. You eat it warm, straight from the stone. From there, the experience opens up. Those who want to cook join the preparation of lunch under the cook's guidance, working with local ingredients and recipes passed down through the family. Meanwhile, the village shepherd makes fresh kefalotiri and mizithra cheese from milk collected that same morning. You watch, you help, and you taste the cheese while it's still warm. Lunch follows with wine, and then you finish the day learning how to make proper Greek coffee on the stove. What holds this experience together is the people. The cook, the shepherd, the village itself. Nothing is staged or scripted. You are a guest in a place where these things happen every day, and for a few hours you take part in them. It's a cooking experience in Crete that goes well beyond the kitchen.
