Tips for Families

  • Elafonisi lagoon is shallow and calm on the western side, making it one of the safer swimming spots in Crete for young children
  • The small group size means the pace stays manageable and kids get more attention from the guide

Your adventure awaits

The southwest corner of Chania is one of the least rushed parts of Crete, and this full-day trip gives you a proper look at it. Over eight hours, you'll cover ground that most visitors never reach on their own: a lagoon with sand that actually turns pink, a coastline that looks more like the Aegean islands than the mainland, and a stop where history sits quietly in the landscape. The day is built around Elafonisi, a shallow tidal lagoon where the mix of crushed coral and white quartz gives the sand its distinctive rose colour. You'll have time to wade into water that barely reaches your knees in places, swim further out if you prefer, or simply find a spot on the beach and stay there. The light here in the morning and early afternoon is different from the east coast, cooler and softer, and the lagoon is calm enough that even young children can move freely in the water. Along the way, the route passes through Chrysoskalitissa Monastery, one of the oldest religious sites on the southwest coast. Your guide walks you through what's still standing and what it meant to the communities that built it. It's a short stop, but one that grounds the day in something beyond a swim and gives the landscape a different kind of meaning. The group is kept small, with a maximum of eight people, and transport is in a private air-conditioned vehicle. Before heading back, you'll sit down to a traditional Cretan meal, a proper pause at the end of the day rather than a rushed stop. Your guide handles everything so you arrive at each place knowing what you're looking at and why it matters.
